Total Ape

Total Ape is the producer and artist-duo constiting of PƤr Almkvist and August Vinberg ā€“ that just last year re-emerged with their single ā€˜Young Godsā€™.

ā€œWeā€™re trying to push the limit in terms of energy, melody, and concept,ā€ says August. ā€œThe music reflects a feeling of losing your shit.ā€ ā€œThereā€™s the emotional side that can evoke memories, and thereā€™s the primal side that just feels good,ā€ adds PƤr. ā€œWe pursue bothā€. On paper, their backgrounds couldnā€™t be more different. ā€œI came from the jazz world,ā€ says PƤr. ā€œAugust sang for a death metal band before we met. Itā€™s like a collision of the chords and the craziness,ā€ he laughs.

Striking a singular chemistry, they began writing and producing for other acts, landing placements in the J-Pop and K-Pop genres. Naturally, the focus shifted to creating their own material. Inspired by the likes of Skrillex and ā€œother dope producers,ā€ the pair quietly amassed a musical arsenal. Initially obscuring their faces and identities, they uploaded ā€œLove You Betterā€ to Soundcloud in 2016 and stirred up enthusiasm among tastemakers as Dancing Astronaut, who called it ā€œloud and bold enough to restore hope past the nationā€™s more segregated urban musical exploits.ā€

Simultaneously, they became a sought-after remix unit, creating official remixes for Nathan Sykesā€™ ā€œGive It Upā€ [feat. G-Eazy], Neikedā€™s ā€œSexual,ā€ Miss Liā€™s ā€œBonfireā€ and many more. As buzz continued to grow, Warner Bros. Records offered the duo a deal. 2017 is the beginning of something bigger for Total Ape.
