Stooshe
Stooshe are an English girl group from London. The group, consisting of members Alexandra Buggs, Karis Anderson, and Courtney Rumbold, were signed to Warner Music UK in August 2011, and they released their first promotional single, “Betty Woz Gone”, in October 2011. Stooshe were nominated for BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll less than two months later.
Their official debut single, “Love Me”, featuring American rapper Travie McCoy, was released in March 2012 and saw the group attain chart success, peaking at number five on the Official UK Singles Chart. The track is a reworking of their original song “Fuck Me”, which was released almost one year earlier, in March 2011. Then, in June 2012, they released the Motown-inspired ballad “Black Heart”, which peaked at number three in the UK charts. It has since become their best-selling song, getting nominated for a BRIT Award in 2013 and being awarded a Platinum certification by the BPI in 2019.
After multiple delays, the group finally released their debut studio album, London with the Lights On, on May 27, 2013.
After leaving Warner Music UK and their management in 2014 due to disagreements over their debut album, Stooshe released “Lock Down” and “Let It Go” in 2016 in anticipation of their second studio album which never materialised. They have been on hiatus ever since.
Karis Anderson revealed that the band’s name originates from the word “Stoosh”, which is a slang term for something expensive, “a girl who thinks she’s nicer than she is”, or being stoned or stashed away. The contrasting definitions solidified their decision. They then added “—she” on the end for female empowerment. It is pronounced like the Scottish word “Stooshie”.
